Re: The Problem of Evil

Apos, You wrote: So a purely logical position for rejecting all theistic claims I am aware of follows. 1. It is preferable to believe truth over falsehood. As a Christian, I am compelled to agree with this sentiment. However, I am not sure why it would be a "given" from the standpoint of atheism. M...

Re: The Problem of Evil

Apos, This discussion is taking place at a very busy season, in which it is very inconvenient to become deeply embroiled in a discussion that is in no sense time-sensitive.... I'll say, It has taken me quite a while to get back to you on this and I'm still mulling over the best way to show you, and...

Re: The Problem of Evil

See, I take a night off and I get books to read through ;) I'm actually really happy with the volume of response I'll try and hit the high points for steve and mattrose who I think I have the greatest degree of disagreement with. Steve, Just a quick note on your comments on what atheists do and thin...

Re: The Problem of Evil

Thanks for the replies. Steve were you aware that I am an atheist? Reading the introduction and first few paragraphs of your post I'm not certain you are. I'll did into the meat above once I'm back home and off my phone. I will say I think the discussions are fruitful. Whether or not anyone converts...

Re: The Problem of Evil

steve7150 ( I would just call you Steve but it seems we have two Steves, I'm looking forward to what other Steve will write. I wonder how you see the opinions of those who feel we didn't need to fall. How do you respond, for instance, to what mattrose wrote? When it comes to Eve, how could she sin i...

Re: The Problem of Evil

Interesting, thanks everyone for your responses. If no one minds I'm going to take a meta response, rather than try and address each point in turn. That should keep this more like a conversation. I did want to address Homer specifically in that I have hope just the same as you. Mine is focused on th...

The Problem of Evil

Wow it got quiet here, I've finally finished the time sucking horror and can spend some more time here, assuming that is still desirable. Though the lot of you will be competing with Space Engineers as they have added planets and flying from ground to orbit is fun. At any rate I've been thinking of ...

Re: The Plausibility of Atheism

Quick reply,

I too had read that the Greks had deduced earth was a sphere and had measured it fairly accurately. This http://starchild.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/Sta ... ion54.html backs that idea up but while a credible site, NASA, I have not had time to validate the claims.

Re: The Plausibility of Atheism

Hey Jason, I'm not even sure what refutation we talked about now, I'd have to go back and look. One of the things I do when I'm looking for information quickly is seek refutations and then rebuttals. If I find a chain I'll read as much as I can. I will happily admit I can't eliminate my own biases, ...

Re: The Plausibility of Atheism

Hey Jason, I finally got a few minutes. Let me see if I can get into this. I'll quote heavily since we've got some distance between the two posts. I’m going to go ahead and address the first two items (the idea of an invisible god requiring belief in him, and the issue of equity) since they both add...
