Jesus never said anything about homosexuality

Post by dwight92070 » Sat May 27, 2017 8:26 pm

How many times have people said this? I've heard it enough to know that I wanted an answer for it. My pastor actually gave me what I think is a good answer. He said that Jesus warned His disciples to "Remember Lot's wife." So I looked that up and of course He is speaking of God's judgment on the city of Sodom with fire and brimstone raining out of heaven. We all know what their primary sin was - sodomy. Then Jesus says that when He returns, it will be just the same as happened at Sodom and the flood, i.e. God will bring judgment on all unbelievers. In other words, He is approving of God's judgment on the those who are homosexual and unrepentant. Even Lot's wife could not resist disobeying God and looking back at that evil city and was instantly turned to salt. Is it possible that her heart had become attached somewhat to the immorality of that city? The angel spoke of the people of Sodom: "... their outcry has become so great before the Lord that the Lord has sent us to destroy it." Genesis 19:13

So what did Jesus say about homosexuality? He said that God destroyed Sodom, in large part, because of that sin (we know they were guilty of other sins as well), and that His judgment when He returns will be just as severe. 2 Peter 2 gives more references to the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah: sensual, unprincipled, ungodly, indulging the flesh in corrupt desires, despising authority, daring, self-willed, reviling, reveling, having eyes full of adultery, greedy, enticing by fleshly desires, slaves of corruption, etc.

It's interesting that of all the sins that these people in Sodom and Gomorrah were committing, Genesis 19 primarily mentions one: homosexuality. But instead of acting on their homosexual desires, Lot offered them his 2 daughters to rape.

Dwight,

Consider:

Matthew 15:19-20 (NASB)
19. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders. 20. These are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the man.”

Notice the behaviors categorized with fornications. To the Jew at the time of Christ fornication (Grk. porneia) included homosexual activities and all kinds of sexual immorality. And under the Law of Moses, still in effect at the time Jesus spoke these words, homosexual activity was a capital offense.

I hadn't made that connection, dwight92070. I think it's worth pointing out. Nevertheless, it's not specifically and unequivocally about homosexuality.

But any conclusion based on "Jesus never said anything about homosexuality" is just a non sequitur. First, how do they know Jesus never said anything about homosexuality? Second, no one has ever said that the only sins are the ones that are specifically addressed by Jesus in the Bible.

Now if the whole Bible never addressed same-sex sex, then it would be worth re-examining our traditions ... but that's not the case.
... that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. John 5:23

The Apostles (sent ones) were authorized to speak on Jesus' behalf after His ascension. Through the Apostle Paul, Jesus apparently had something to say about homosexuality.

Speaking on behalf of Jesus, Paul in Romans 1:26-27 said, "For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due." (NKJV)

Speaking for Jesus, Paul said in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, "Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God." (NKJV)

In 1 Timothy 1:9-10, the Apostle told Timothy, "knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine." (NKJV)

Candlepower,

Of course you are right. This too is a very good point, although I can see where some would object and say, "Well, that's not Jesus' words." But, in reality, Jesus sanctioned their words.
