Sharing with Guy from India

Post by mikew » Tue Jan 13, 2009 11:41 pm

I work with a guy from India who hasn't heard of Abraham or Jacob or anything really of Christianity. He just knows how many problems there are in the Middle East.

Two things are of interest here: how to approach him in mild evangelism and how to just explain some simple aspects about Christianity to get him in casual conversation. The other thought is to write out some simple introduction to Christianity.

Does anyone have any recommendations of websites or approaches?

I would say the first thing we could do as Christians Mike is gently show others the character and nature of Christ in our thoughts, words, deeds and actions. We will reflect the image of the God that we behold. By always reflecting a pleasant and outgoing spirit filled with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control we will cause people to wonder what our secret is! Of course, that's loads easier said than done, but it is unmistakable evidence of the Holy Spirit working in our lives. And that leads to the second and most important step...pointing others to the cross of Christ.

Christ is the light of the world and by pointing others to His work on the cross and His atoning sacrifice for all of mankind, a sacrifice that was born of self-less love and devotion towards this great cause and His Father, by showing others the work of Christ and Holy Spirit in our lives is the surest way for people to see the love of Christ. People don't need a sermon so much these days as the knowledge and wisdom that in spite of all the world's problems and terrible conditions there is a God - the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob that deeply loves and cares for His entire creation.

May the Lord bless you and be with you in your work! :D

(My name has been too much on the active topic board too often unchanged. I'm not sure what to think.... ) But, the only "object" would be the Holy Writ of the New Testament manuscripts in some english translation, where we find all of our glorious stuff. If some Hindi was to turn me on to the Bagdavagita, that would be awsome. I would almost wish I were an Indian. There may even be Hindi practioners who are heretically teaching "other than" what is written in thier Holy writ.... and you would be able to question it yourself then, if there were no Hindi escorts available 24hrs per day.

RND suggests teaching them some beliefs. I do not reccomend you do that.

TEXT vs merely ones BELEIFS. And which beliefs? Yours? Steve Greggs? Paidions? Mine? Toms? darinhoustons? TKs? All the same Bible. (This is both fun, and interesting. But I might suggest a nice turn on to the TEXT itself. "In them ye think ye have eternal life, But in them ye find Me".

Jesus Christ. Son of the Living God. Jesus seen raised after having been put to death. Jesus thought to be the very JHVH, Lord God of the Jew Himself, come in as a man-child. Now this may be of great use and of great interest to a man from India. This is first incarnation, not RE-incarnation. And the scriptures imply that man, through this Holy One, can hope to live again after we die. Not re-incarnation, but a continuing and never ending life of a living soul. This is an incredible hope that many doubt is even possible. If it is possible, it is possible. maybe conditional, but if this Holy writ be a true testimony, it is possible, by this one true living God of both the quick and the dead. His Son being this very Jesus Christ found in this Book of Holy documents.

Could someone please show me how this paragraph are also "mere beliefs", please.

Hard to say because I do not know him well. And it also depends how long he has been in America and how cultured he is. But a few things you may want to consider is to not use christian ease (spelling?). Also don't put your Bible on the floor and don't show the bottom of your feet, etc. Try to make the way you present the Gospel and the things of the Gospel simple and easy to pass on so that if he has a family or a 'vain of gold' (friends, etc.) he can pass it on to them and they to others easily. He may need some background to understand the things of the NT or of God depending on his worldview and the way he sees God. So some talking about Gods' attributes and how sin came into the world and evil, etc. may be necessary. Might want to learn what you can about how he views life and the God of the Bible, but then again simply telling him that his sins can be forgiven in Christ and about His death and resurrection and repentance may be enough.
But really this may be an opportunity to reach his family as well. Just try to think beyond him to his family--what you say may be passed on to his family, that's why I say simple and easy and nothing fancy. He may or may not be as individualistic as us Americans which, if he is not, can be used effectively to the benefit of the Gospel.
But getting to know what he believes could be a key factor in determining how to be all things to all people in that you could then have more of a chance to help the things of the Bible to make sense to him in his 'language'. Anyways, hope this helps, if not discard it.
