How Does Cooperation Evolve?

Post by jonperry » Tue Jun 14, 2016 6:12 pm

At first glance it seems that natural selection should always promote selfishness, yet all throughout biology (while there is an awful lot of selfishness), we also find incredible examples of cooperation. Genes work together to create cells, cells work together to create multi-celled organisms, bees working together to create hives and so on.

Our new animation looks at symbiosis in lichen (combo of algae and fungus) to get an idea about what kinds of conditions cause natural selection to favor and magnify cooperation. Check it out here and let me know what you think:

Steve, I actually started discussing this once on your show a few years back but you stopped me cause I was taking too long. I narrowed it down to 3 minutes here ;)
