Mary and Joseph were both of the tribe of Judah (I understand the genealogy of Luke 3:23ff to be Mary's). Thus Jesus was born of the royal line. Judah received the birthright (of rulership) because his three older brothers—Reuben, Simeon and Levi—were each disqualified by their wickedness (Reuben, for sleeping with his father's concubine; Simeon and Levi for their bloodthirsty treachery against the city of Shechem). That left Judah next in line for the birthright. He also acted the most commendably of the brothers in the matter of the jeopardy of Benjamin.

Moses was of the tribe of Levi.
