Sinalphile, Most all countries have a mixed economy. Parts of the economy are free and parts are socialized. In describing a country it is not all or nothing. It can have a variable portion of the economy that has been socialized. Countries can be more or socialist than others.

Hi. I agree. In the same way, one person can be "more pacifist" than another. I wouldn't join the military, so I'm more of a pacifist than some Christians. Nevertheless, I'm not a pacifist. Canada might be "more socialist" than some developed countries, but it does not have a socialist economy. No need to muddy the waters more than nec. There are countries where the economy is based on the gov't control and ownership of all means and distribution of capital, land, etc. Canada is not one of them. Am I wrong about that?thrombomodulin wrote:Sinalphile, Most all countries have a mixed economy. Parts of the economy are free and parts are socialized. Anyway, more on topic, since I haven't commented on this thread (not that I think I have much to add) ...
I do not think that "Christian-Democrat" is an oxymoron. There are concerns. Most of them (re. economics) are grey areas, imo, and I would not condemn a bro/sis for disagreeing with me. As for abortion and marriage redefinition, a person could disagree with those parts of the platform and still vote Democratic and be a Christian, or I suppose a Christian could support gov't legalization of these things without approving of them.

Check out this site that lists Canada among the "ten most socialist countries in the world."

I googled that, too. It's a blog post (from 2012). I'm not convinced. Again, in terms of the actual definition of economic socialism, Canada is not socialist, I would argue. If you have another definition of economic socialism, then that's different.Paidion wrote:Check out this site that lists Canada among the "ten most socialist countries in the world."

I am not saying that a socialist economy (where all or practically all production and distribution of resources is controlled and collectively owned) is good or bad. I really don't care to get into that debate.

I think it's worth mentioning that Canada has a tiny population and huge natural resources so even Socialism could work there for awhile, but i do know private business does operate there.

Absolutely! The socialism of Canada consists of a more equitable distribution of capital through taxation—income tax reduction for the middle class and virtually no income tax for the lower class. Taxation provides socialist programs to aid the poor. Provincial taxation provides total payments for medical treatment, provision for medical travel grants, amounts to reduce electricity costs for lower income people, etc....but i do know private business does operate there.

We have a similar system here but to a lessor degree as for example health insurance is subsidized based on a sliding income scale under Obamacare. May i ask what income a typical doctor would make in Canada?

Until now, I didn't know the answer to that question. But I did an internet search. Here's a site in which it was stated that the average annual income (before taxes) is $225,000 (that's in Canadian dollars, of course).

But for a lot of them, it's higher. It depends on their area of expertise of course. The above site starts out with greater amounts for various practices, but further on in the article, it mentions the $225,000 average.
