Mormon mixing

Post by SWIFTELK » Tue May 13, 2014 5:10 pm

We called a music store to find a piano teacher nearby and were referred to a nice lady in our little town of about 2000. She is Mormon. She is a nice lady and does a good job and my general inclination is she's doing fine so why would I care. Generally speaking I don't think we should put up walls. However, she only has 4 other students and they are all from the Mormon Church. They do an occasional recital at the church where they pray before and after the recital and have some food afterwards. We get that "we're the other family" feeling. Anyway, just thought I would throw it out there to see what people thought. Like I personally don't like to create walls and I try to teach the kids that not everyone believes the same but we should respect them on their "turf" if you will. My son is 10 but we will have the other kids in there in the next couple years. I don't think the kids are any wiser about doctrinal issues but then again kids grow up and these people will play a influential role in their life. Now I am rambling... Thoughts?

Hopefully your children are the one who will be influential to them and not the other way.

Your children are being taught piano. I don't think the teacher will use this as an opportunity to proselytize them. Would you have a similar concern (albeit not as great a concern) that your children would be proselytized if the teacher were Baptist?

Yes, your child could make a difference in a teacher's life! Yes, and what if the teacher were an atheist and an adulterer? ...or a Calvinist - ''God is in control'' frequently flows from their lips ( in this area where we live). But the things our children come home with that they have learned in the world are great teaching opportunities.

Teach your children who Jesus is, why He came, and that in heaven there is no marriage or family as on earth. We are God's children, of HIS family.

I agree that we should not insulate ourselves from people in the world, but if I found a better piano teacher who is a Spirit-led Christian, I would be tempted to switch in a heartbeat. Bless you!!

Hello Swift, as a former Mormon, and one who regularly preaches against the Mormon cult as a most brilliant deception of the devil (!), I am still enamored with the people as a whole. It may be that because the mixture of law with grace, and trying to gain righteousness through the law, they do for the most part fulfill a practical way of living pure lives. I do not find that people who are made aware of the falsehoods of Joseph Smith ‘ahead’ of time, fall for the deceptions of Mormonism. I would rather send my kids to a Mormon school than public school, as I believe bad behavior is more tempting to children than bad doctrine. I am currently glad my grandkids go to a Catholic school rather than a public school (my daughters choice, although she is Greek orthodox), but I still have concerns. Most importantly is a good apologetic teaching that you control, as all children need to be able to learn to weigh the evidence and facts for themselves. This ability far out weighs being told what to believe.

Very good Paidion

Having been around many Mormons over the years, I agree with jriccitelli
. They seem to raise good kids and they are pleasant to be around.

Thanks for the thoughts. I have similar sentiments, however it's good to touch base to be aware of potential dangers. With them being so much into evangelism I didn't want to go looking for trials.
