Romans 1-2 and Nathan's Parable to David
I recently completed a Masters Thesis showing how Romans 1:18-2:2 is similar to Nathan's approach to David (2 Sam 12). The thesis discussion was narrow and didn't give opportunity to show that Rom 1:18-32 had best described Jews. It was good to hear that Steve's audio series on Romans describes Rom ...

Re: The faith OF Jesus Christ
No one has really dealt with the wording in Gal 2:16 We have "so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ" The quick paraphrase is that we have come to have faith in Christ in order that we would be justified by that faith. The act of faith brought forth the...

Re: The faith OF Jesus Christ
I wanted to point out (without any change of view from my original post) that many scholars, such as NT Wright, translate the genitive as faithfulness of Christ rather than faith of Christ. So most of the debate has been against or for the 'faithfulness of Jesus' proposal. I was checking my notes fo...

Re: The faith OF Jesus Christ
There is an ambiguity between the meaning of 'faith in Jesus' and 'faithfulness of Jesus.' Such ambiguity appears perfect for the application to trust in Christ. I am strongly in favor of priority of "faith in Jesus" with enhancement sense that our trust is derived from the faithfulness of Jesus. Th...

Re: Sharing a Paper in March
Congrats! Hopefully we will see it in the essay section one of these days or you can link to it. I'd be interested in seeing it whenever you are ready to offer it to the general public. That passage is on the docket for me this semester as one I have to consider in a larger project. You said that y...

Sharing a Paper in March
I wasn't sure whether to mention this... I submitted a paper for an SBL regional conference in November and got approval to share that paper just before Christmas. The paper is an alternative explanation of Paul's argument in Gal 2:15-18. My understanding of this passage goes back, officially, to 20...

Re: Who Was the Wretched Man, Romans 7?
Mikew, Consider what Paul has just said in chapter 6: Romans 6:16-19 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 16. Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey , either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in r...

Re: Who Was the Wretched Man, Romans 7?
Mikew wrote: Paul just seemed to say that in this life they should recognize that their mind can desire to focus on doing good. But their bodies may not fully cooperate. These two conflicting elements would still coexist. But this does not fit Paul's statement "I am flesh (his behavior is carnal), ...

Re: Who Was the Wretched Man, Romans 7?
Hi Mike, are you saying Paul was speaking of a progression toward perfection that we might somehow achieve in this life, or what? Are we wretched, and then progress out of that state into a perfected state? No. Not at all like that. Paul just seemed to say that in this life they should recognize th...

Re: Who Was the Wretched Man, Romans 7?
Regarding the original post... Paul was talking about the Roman gentiles' history until the time of the letter. When the earliest members of the gentile followers of Christ joined the church it was through the synagogue. Eventually they came to reject their encounter with the law-focused culture in ...
