I find some of the old commentaries often have insight that's hard to find elsewhere. In particular, for these questions I'd suggest Albert Barnes' Notes, and Robertson's Word Pictures in the New Testament. The latter might be especially helpful here, as Robertson was a Greek scholar, and Word Pictu...
