Critique a comment.

A pastor at a church I have been to a few times made the comment in his sermon...

"Before I was baptized I never really did anything wrong, I wasn't a bad person. I just felt like there was something missing in my life"

What do you think of this comment?
Would you question if a person that makes a comment like this is saved?

I would understand his comment in a relative, not absolute, sense. He might only mean that he had not been involved in scandalous activities and that he was not what anyone would regard as a "bad" person. This is probably a true testimony. It does not necessarily mean that he was sinless.

This is a conversation from another forum. From the same church as the elder. Any thoughts on this?

The reason I ask is because I am struggling with a church to go to. I like this church and the people, but I am questioning alot of what is taught.

Post subject: What's the Gospel of Jesus Christ?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Craig Wrote :

The truth from God to mankind revealing how we can be reconciled to our creator and what behaviour is required from his children. The illumination of the true intent of the old law. It truly should be "good news" to those that hear it.

Craig, what did you mean by "the illumination of the true intent of the old law?" and what do we do with this illumination?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What I mean is how Jesus came not to destroy the law but to fulfill it in righteousness. He came to reveal that to his people. It was part of the gospel he preached. For example: The intent of the law was that God's people would love each other, not just don't kill each other. "You have heard that it was said by them of old times thou shalt not" etc, etc.

What we do with this illumination is live in it to fulfill the righteousness that we were called to. Not be bound by the limitations of the old law. Live in the newness of the Spirit.

Side note:They believe that you have to live that righteous live in the spirit in order to be accepted into heaven.

Steve...
You are going to be here (Oregon) on the 28th. I think I am going to hit you with some of these questions while you are here. I am looking forward to it.
