Who was Melchizedek ?

I would like to invite you all to have a discussion concerning Melchizedek.
Genesis tells us he was the king of Salem. Was that a real city in existance at the time or is this just a metaphore in the word. Paul tell us in Hebrews 7 that he had no father or mother, neither beginning of days nor end of life. I would like to hear all of your comments please.
