Very little difference. Proponents of both views believe that God orchestrates all events in order to fulfill a deeper purpose.

Calvin's beliefs on predestination and divine sovereignty (that is, the views usually associated with "Calvinism") came from Augustine.
The latter also was the father of many Roman Catholic views as well, many of which Calvin did not follow.
