Ironically, I have already begun to write a little article concerning the Law and in which respects we are obligated, an article which may answer your question. I hope to post it fairly soon. Actually, I have been writing it in order to respond to something Steve addressed to me. If I were as young and quick of mind as Steve, it would already have been posted.

Man judges a person by his past deeds, and administers penalties for his wrongdoing. God judges a person by his present character, and disciplines him that he may become righteous.

My understanding is that the "laws" or sayings of Jesus & his Apostles in the NT are known by 7 names

Law of Christ
of God
of the Holy Spirit
Royal Law
Law of Liberty
of Faith
Sorry can't remember the 7th

It's not the same as the Law of Moses which had more to do with blessings and curses because we are saved by faith in Christ , and if he is your Lord you would desire to obey his directives.

I think the information below from Wikipedia is critical. The Jews had three levels of understanding of sin. There is some question about which sins might have been forgivable in the OT and which ones weren't.
