Jared,
I am not comp[letely sure, but I think I got the impression somewhere that these calculations originated in a book by Grant R. Jeffrey, called "Armageddon:Appointment With Destiny." You might check on that lead.
OT Prophets and 1948
Aha! It was right under my nose the whole time. I googled Jeffreys and found that he has a web site. I looked there and then realized that I have one of his books on my shelf. Its one that I've not paid much attention to since I got it, because something I couldn't quite put my finger on seemed a little hokey about it (perhaps its because he doesn't appear to cite many sources, makes flamboyant claims, and the style seems rather sensational). The one I have is not the one you mentioned but rather one entitled "The Signature of God." It seems to be an anthology of Jeffreys' claims rather than a full exposition of one topic. However, he had a short blurb in there about this, and it appears to be the exact thing I was looking for. He claims to have found this in Ezekiel, and I do recall my friend starting out with Ezekiel. Jeffreys also talks about the lunar year, etc., so I think this is it.
The short version of his claim is that in Ezekiel 4, a prophecy is made that Israel will be punished for their sins for 360 years, but then he connects that with a passage in Leviticus where God promises to multiply punishment by 7. So 7 x 360 = 2,520. He does some other tricks to get the year to come out to exactly 1948, which I don't have time right now to go into. Already I can see some potential problems (like on what basis does he link the Leviticus passage with the Ezekiel passage?), but I need to explore the matter a bit further before I comment.
Thanks for that Steve; you hit the nail on the head!

I had a friend give me a book that mentioned the same thing, I posted the question here: http://www.wvss.com/forumc/viewtopic.php?t=90 just in case there is any information there that might help.
It does seem puzzling that this mathmatical approach the rebirth of Israel could be argued to be a literal interpretation of scripture. It seems more like this method is to "allegorize" the scripture instead of just reading it to see what it actually states.
