Peter's "scoffers" and Jude's "mockers"

Post by Mellontes » Sat Feb 19, 2011 11:43 pm

How about doing this simple Bible study? Knowing that the mockers from Jude 1:18 (Strong’s G1703) is the exact same Greek word used in 2 Peter 3:3 for scoffers, (and the only 2 instances of the entire NT) try to understand Jude in the following light. I understand Jude as saying that these “scoffers” from Peter’s mini prophecy HAD ARRIVED by the statements of “there ARE, these ARE, etc. from Jude’s epistle as follows:

For there are certain men crept in unawares…(Jude 1:4)
Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh…(Jude 1:8)
But these speak evil of those things which they know not…(Jude 1:10)
These are spots in your feasts of charity…(Jude 1:12)These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts…(Jude 1:16)
These be they who separate themselves…(Jude 1:19)

Jude is comparing the faithful believers with those who had come upon the PRESENT 1ST CENTURY SCENE. Peter’s scoffers had arrived!

2 Peter and Jude are commonly regarded as having some sort of literary link - whether 2 Peter drew upon Jude, or Jude drew upon 2 Peter, or whether both drew upon some other source. { http://www.frontline-apologetics.com/2n ... _Jude.html }

I wouldn't have a problem with that any more than I would with Revelation's literary link with Daniel, Ezekiel, Isaiah and Jeremiah and Matthew...or with the NT's literary link with the old testament. This would just be standard hermeneutic practice of comparing Scripture with Scripture - letting the Bible interpret itself.

I probably would choose (out of the 3 suggested) that Jude drew from Peter.
