What new ideas were introduced by Darby?

Steve has mentioned that some parts of the dispensational futurism view were newly introduced by Darby. I would like to know which parts of the dispensational-futurism view were unknown prior to Darby, and on the other hand which parts have historical precedent. Can anyone please help me with this?

My understanding is that Darby picked up several ideas from the preaching of Edward Irving and the visions of Margaret MacDonald. Google those names and see what pops up. As always, remember the internet is not always a reliable source.

I think mainly the 7 year tribulation from Daniel 9.27 and the Anti-Christ also from there "the prince to come" who will destroy the city. That idea is imported into Rev 4-19.

Hi Thrombomodulin,

Here is a short article that may help:

http://www.christianitytoday.com/ch/131 ... darby.html

And another a bit longer that includes a third article explaining the Irving connection mentioned by SamIam:

I have been meaning to ask you if you work in the medical field. I have an inherited condition, low level of antithrombin, that caused an extremely serious blood clot in my leg 19 years ago, so I have read of thrombomodulin.

Blessings, Homer

I believe he also introduced the idea that God had two distinct peoples and so his idea was that we should view the Church & Israel as separate.

Homer,

Thanks for the links, I'll try to read them later tonight.

I do not. My medical knowledge is quite minimal, I had long ago come to the point of picking a username and had only recently read 'Darwin's black box' by Behe. The book is full of words, most of which had not already been taken by someone else. I choose this one rather arbitrarily. It was from a fascinating chapter on the clotting of blood. I am still amazed by the complexity of the process God created.

The second link was helpful. It appears to affirm that the several doctrines of dispensationalism arose only slightly before Darby, mostly by Edward Irving from the year 1812 and following. Those main features being (1) two second comings of Christ - one for the rapture, another for the day of judgment. (2) israel/church distinction - so far as to say some much of scripture is for jews, and not Christians.
