New Heavens and New Earth

Post by darinhouston » Fri Oct 16, 2020 10:45 am

A couple of light questions.

(1) if Jesus came as the Second Adam to restore what was lost at the Fall and we will get a New Creation to restore Eden to its original state, why will we not be married or given in marriage? Adam and Eve were. Why no procreation?

(2) why will there be a New Heavens?

The purpose of the procreation was the multiply and fill the earth but that may have been accomplished already depending on how many end up in the New Heavens. Personally i think most and maybe ultimately all will make it.
I think that sin will be eradicated but also the people in the New Heavens will remember their experiences of living through sin and it's consequences, so God will have a family living in the Kingdom of God forever.

I've not researched the phrase "New heavens and new earth" but the understanding shared is that the new heavens and new earth refers to the new creation and worship situation of those in Christ. The destruction of Jerusalem and the temple left a gap in that Jerusalem represented (or actually was) the sole point of contact between the people and God. Now this idea makes sense where Jerusalem coincides with the earth while the temple is patterned after the heavens -- of God's realm. The New Jerusalem (Rev 21; Gal 4:21-31) could not be resolved until the old temple (2nd Temple) was purged or cleansed and the earthly Jerusalem destroyed. The church in Christ began earlier but could not really be inaugurated and stand out in glory until the earthly Jerusalem and Temple were decisively ended and the true believers of Israel collected until God -- hence the assignment given to the Apostles in Matt 28. In Christ, we are new creatures and thus fit in with the new creation and likewise are part of the new heavens and new earth.
The reason that the Revelation could be lacking on details of our future is that the purpose of Revelation only was to encourage Christians who were suffering through the apostasy and tribulation of the transition to the new heavens and new earth. Revelation 20, for example, does not explain what happens to the saints after Rev 20:7-10, which shows camp of the Christians being encircled by the "army" of nations deceived by Satan and then judged/removed by God. (Rev 20:7-10 may be added parenthetically only to ensure that people can understand the ultimate end of Satan's influence.)
Nor does Rev 20:4-6 describe what happens to the souls raised to rule with Christ at the end of the 1000. That point in time only provides a marker when additional events would happen, not particularly an end to their reigning with Christ. Consider also that Revelation 20-22 do not clarify how and when all things are put under Christ that then is followed by Christ being under God (1 Corinthians 15:27). Or, perhaps, 1 Cor 15:27 is accomplished with Rev 20-22, but then is not explaining what happens to Christians after that.
