Hi Emmett,
So though they are the words of men, they are called the Word of God?
Yes , it is the WORD of God. The IDEAS ( WORD) were dictated by God to man and man wrote those IDEAS (WORD) but when man wrote the ideas given by God they wrote it base on their own historical setting ,educational background and upbringing.

For example the job of a secreatary is to transcribe the words dictated by their boss to them although it was written by the secreatary it is still the word of their boss.Obviously the secreatary will have to fine tune the sentences that he/she have written and when she does this there will be a slight change in the sentence structure but the main idea does not change. Now, the sentence structure will depend on how good the secreatary in english grammar or whatever language they are using.
It is the same with God the words or ideas were dictated by God written by men and their writings will depend on their educational background, historical setting and their upbringing.

Hello, Paul,

Of course, for important correspondence a secretary brings a copy back to the boss for review before the boss applies the signature. Thus, the boss retains editorial control, and validates the form which the secretary has produced. The reason for this, naturally, is that secretaries can miscarry their assignment.

Shlamaa,
Emmet

Paul, I actually disagree with the dictation theory... at least in part. God dictated some things to Moses and the prophets but these instances were relatively rare when we look at the whole of scripture. Paul's memory failed him in 1 Corinthians 1:16 so God obviously wasn't dictating that particular discourse on baptism. There are other examples, of course, but it seems as though the New Testament writers simply wrote what they knew. They were imperfect men but chosen by Christ himself to carry out his message. I don't believe Jesus used improper or uninformed judgement in selecting these men.

I can see why the issue of "infalliblity" is so important to some but I can actually see good reasons why God would allow for slight mistakes on the part of some authors... if this were indeed the case. If the gospels all hit every point with the same minutiae in every respect, this would certainly give the impression of fruad since any time we take several eyewitness accounts of an event, there are variances in detail. This, in one sense, helps confirm the event took place, even though one or more witnesses were mistaken on the details. If you study fictionalized accounts, you see uniformity. If the writers of scripture were perpetuating a hoax, for exmaple, they were quite unskilled in the practice since they broke all the rules. :D
