Does/Did God Break His own Commandments?

Post by _SoaringEagle » Sun Jun 10, 2007 2:20 pm

Someone on another forum says yes, and posted the following, and I thought it would make a good discussion topic!:

1. I am the LORD thy god. Thou shalt have no other gods before me...
...like Jesus, or the "Holy Spirit."

2. Thou shalt not make for thyself an idol...
...like the Bible, which is fervently worshiped by millions of believers.

3. Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy god in vain...
...yes, little Timmy, Jesus is Lord!

4. Remember the Sabbath day, and keep it holy...
...such a pity it's on Saturday, and practically every Christian in the world breaks it on a regular basis.

5. Honor thy father and thy mother...
...by "hating" them in order to follow Jesus, according to his own instructions.

6. Thou shalt not murder...
...no comment. This one obviously holds little weight with Yahweh. Or his followers, for that matter.

7. Thou shalt not commit adultery...
...such as the Holy Spirit rapi- I mean "coming upon" the ex-virgin Mary. Don't you just love Homer-inspired deo-human unions and the delightful little demigod offspring they produce?

8. Thou shalt not steal...
...unless Yahweh tells you to. In that case, steal all the finest treasures for the temple and steal the women for your personal pleasures (kill everything else though).

9. Thou shalt not bear false witness...
...such as Yahweh lying to kings by means of prophets to whom he has sent "deceptive spirits"?

10. Thou shalt not covet...
..."For I, the LORD thy God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me..."

Looks like typical atheist brain-flatulence.

OK i'll bite,

1. Jesus and the HS are the diety of the Father therefore they are not other gods.
2. Believing the bible is not equal to worshipping it.
3. Same as #1.
4. The Sabbath is fulfilled in Jesus since he is Lord of the Sabbath therefore neither Sat or Sunday are commanded as special days for Christians.
5. You can put Jesus first but still honor parents, that's what hate means in this context.
7. Not worthy of a response.
8. If Yahweh commands this then it is His righteous judgment.
9. Same as 8.
10. IMO this is poetic language about the consequences of sin.

SoaringEagle, what you need to understand is that people who write such things have extremely poor literary understanding, interpretive abilities, and cultural knowledge. They run everything through a modern lens and make assumptions based on a very poor understanding of all things needed to make educated assumptions.

But regardless of all this -- your job as a follower of Jesus, as well as mine, is to act with outrageous love toward all people at all times. When hostile unbelievers see us doing this and spew their venom anyway, their conscience will be irritated. This is a good thing. The problem nowadays is that we've forgotten that we are commanded not to return insult for insult, but insult with blessing.

We should also be known for being reasonable thinkers, but that only takes you so far with the uninformed. Love will take you much farther, from my experience. They can show you a bunch of arguments that seem to prove Christians are hateful people, but when the Christian standing in front of them doesn't fit their mold, they are forced to either listen to their conscience or ignore it.

MLH, Sometimes being able to answer criticisms like this can make you stronger, not for the purpose of winning a debate but just knowing there are answers out there.

My comment on No. 7 (since Steve7150 made no comments).

I think Mary was like a surrogate mother. She provided the womb, and was not the supplier of the ovum. (Otherwise Jesus would have had a share of sinful human essence.)
