Test the Spirits....

Post by _IlovetheLord » Sun Jan 22, 2006 3:27 pm

I look around today and see that people do not "test the spirits." It's as if whatever they hear someone say on tv or from a pulpit is truth.

Often I visit another christian website with a forum. People post things just like here. One such post that I came across to asked: "Who is your favorite teacher/preacher?

People listed various names but amoung them were:

John Hagee
Joyce Meyer
T.D. Jakes
Benny Hinn
Jack Van Impe
Benny Hinn, John Hagee, and Jack Van Impe--->really impressive. Knows his Bible, and also knows his history!
Those three are someones favorite?

What is going on?

It's Pop-Culture Christianity. In other words, they are on TV and do a good job of acting, so obviously they know what they are talking about too, right?

People get the "doctrine" they teach ingrained in their head and can't accept anything else. Even though they've probably never read the Bible themselves to test what they say.

I've seen it all too often.

I think that it's probably true that people who have very little or no knowlege of the Bible are easily led by these teachers.

I'll also confess that every one of those teachers on the list above has caused me to pause to watch while channel surfing. Apparently they have that "undefinable characteristic" (charisma?) that causes you to stop and take notice.

Years ago I used to catch Jack Van Impe on some network channel. I was impressed with his gift to memorize the Bible but I have learned since that his gift does not necessarily translate into correct understanding. As I watch him I can now see that he mis-applies scripture to fit his beliefs. I do not believe his gift was intended for that purpose.
I rarely watch any of these types of programs anymore.

I like the logo at the bottom of your post, Allyn, thats my prayer for myself.

Remember, people are at various stages of growth in their walk with the Lord. Not everyone is as blessed as I am learning truth from this forum.
We all need to ask for wisdom........Discernment will come! Thanks Steve
G for your teachings and I have had the privilege of attending his meetings in person and his spirit and zeal for truth is very evident.
