Jesus is 'Michael the Archangel' SDA teaching

Post by _pilgrim » Mon Dec 26, 2005 4:35 pm

Steve, a mutual friend is attending SDA church meetings and I was shocked when she said she now believes that Jesus is Michael the Archangel. She said she read a SDA book that proves it!

Your comments please.

It would take more than an SDA book to prove that thesis. There are Christian commentators who have suggested that Michael (whose name means "Who is like God?") is another name for Christ, but I think this unlikely.

Michael is seldom mentioned in scripture—only three times in Daniel, once in Jude and once in Revelation. He is the only being called "the archangel" in scripture (Jude 9). The voice of the (unnamed) archangel is mentioned in 1 Thesds.5:16, and some think this to be a reference to Christ's voice, though this is not a necessary inference.

The word "archangel" means "chief angel" or "chief of the angels." Taken in the latter sense, it would be roughly equivalent to "commander of the army of the LORD"—a being who appeared to Joshua and often identified with Christ by Christian commentators (Josh.5:14).

Michael is called "one of the chief princes" in Daniel 10:13, which doesn't sound unique enough to be a reference to Christ. Michael is a might one, but I don't believe he is the almighty One.

The SDAs believe Michael is not really an angel but a messanger from God and they believe he is "the Angel of the Lord" who spoke to Moses at the burning bush. I think "the Angel of the Lord" is Christ but i doubt he is Michael. Besides what Steve said, in Jude ,Michael says to Satan "May the Lord rebuke you" whereas in contrast Jesus always spoke with authority over Satan.

Thanks for your reply to my question. I will pass on your comments to my friend.

I am also going to find the SDA 'Clear Word Bible' to look for any revelant passages they might have changed to 'prove' their theology.

do most SDA's hold to this view?

This comes to mind:

Hebrews 1:5 For to which of the angels did God ever say,
"You are my Son
;
today I have become your Father"? Or again,
"I will be his Father,
and he will be my Son"? 6 And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says,
"Let all God's angels worship him." 7 In speaking of the angels he says,
"He makes his angels winds,
his servants flames of fire.
" 8 But about the Son he says,
"Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever,
and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom.

Don't see how He can be an Angel.

The SDAs don't believe Michael is an actual angel but "Angelos" meaning messenger.
