Just because Paul was very opposed to taking John Mark on another trip doesn't mean he fell prey to unfair harshness and rejection. We don't have quite enough information to make that kind of judgment. Paul probably had very sound reasons for not wanting to take him, and likewise, Barnabus for wanting to give him a second chance.

The way it turned out in the end, however, glorified God whether the individual actions did or didn't, I"m not sure we can say.

If Paul had had his way, it is highly probable that John Mark would never have become the outstanding disciple which he became.

Hardness and criticism seems to have the results of stagnating Christian growth.

As I see it, all of us need all the encouragement we can get.

It is God's kindness that is meant to lead us to repentance (Rom. 2:4) ---- not His harshness and rejection of us when we fail.

And I would add that, as we move into this, John 17:23 will be fulfilled.

If Paul was doing it with a spirit of harshness and rejection, it is very unlikely he would have accepted him back later. Just as their are times for biological parents to be stern and enact consequences to failures in their children, the same is true for spiritual parents/leaders. What we KNOW is that John-Mark's ship got righted. We can only GUESS that the same would have been the case if both Barnabas AND Paul would have done what Barnabas did.
