Porn spammer

Post by backwoodsman » Fri Dec 15, 2017 11:59 am

Another spammer, and so soon after the last one just a few days ago. And this one is advertising porn. 40 posts and counting over the last 22 minutes, as I type this.

There really is no need for this to keep happening. I wonder if the admins wouldn't like to reconsider my suggestions for eliminating the spam problem and reducing the admins' workload? It really can be solved pretty simply.

I banned the user, but I'm having to delete posts 1 by 1 (which is annoying). I'd vote for whatever you are talking about.

Well, you're the only admin who has even logged in in the last 30-some hours, so had you not taken care of the problem, the forum would still be flooded with porn ads. Hence the wisdom of having a few more admins/moderators, which I've suggested several times in the past; but the below is an even better solution, which I've also suggested several times.

So I guess your vote wins. :) In any case, as they say, it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission.

I'm not familiar with phpBB, so the terms may be different, and I can't walk you through doing it. But what needs to be done is, set it so all new members' posts require moderation, then set it so new members don't require approval to join. Then make sure it's clear during the signup process that new members can't post without approval; when spammers see that, in my experience, almost all don't bother signing up because they know they won't be able to post.

From what I've been able to find online, it looks like the setting in phpBB would be to require approval of each new member's first X number of posts, default being 3. After X posts are approved, the member is no longer moderated. So there may not be a separate setting to make new members moderated by default.

I think something similar to this is carried out on the Evangelical Universalist forum.

Man judges a person by his past deeds, and administers penalties for his wrongdoing. God judges a person by his present character, and disciplines him that he may become righteous.

I'll ask Jared if this can be setup -- it sounds like a good solution.
