"Prayer Meetings"

Post by _Homer » Tue Jan 31, 2006 1:25 am

Do any of you attend a church or meet with a group primarily for prayer? I mean at a time other than the usual Sunday morning service.

If so, what is it like? Prayer and nothing else? Prayer requests by people who do not themselves pray out loud? Organized or completely informal? People praying simultaneously?

Any opinions, positive or negative regarding any aspects of what you have observed or experienced would be appreciated.

Thanks - I've been pondering this.

Blessings, Homer

Our church of about 220 people has a Wednesday 'prayer meeting'

Usually about 15-25 people attend. We actually have 2 groups. One group prays the entire hour. The other group does a 30 minute bible study before or after prayer.

The prayer is quite informal. Usually the same 3-5 people pray. Once the room is quiet for half a minute or so, I close in prayer.

Last year I noticed that a handful of these 'faithful few' were disgruntled that more members of our church didn't attend. But we reminded them (and in some cases they siimply didn't know) that there are various 'small groups' that meet weekly in homes and include intense prayer. I am trying to get ths Wednesday group to view themselves as a great small group instead of as a small church-wide prayer meeting.

Matthew,

Thanks! Just the kind of info I'm interested in. Anyone else?

My church has several small group meetings throughout the week. 4 or 5 of them are specifically prayer gatherings. One in paticular begins by showing a mission video or an audio and then they have one hour or so of prayer on what they viewed or heard.

I used to be involved in weekly prayer meeting. Also, my wifes side of the family sometimes gets everyone together (if we are all in the same city) to just pray with one another which I would say is a "prayer meeting".
From my undrstanding and experience "prayer meetings" usually consist of a small group of people that come together to pray for one another or some body who isnt present in the group. There's no rhyme or reason when it comes to order of people praying, who prays, what is prayed for, etc... The main focus is getting together in Christ name and praying for one another in fellowship. You can go around the room before praying and ask people what is on thier heart or mind to pray about, that way you kinda have an idea what to pray for. Also, you can break out the Scriptures (before or during prayer) and pray a Psalm or verse that is on your heart. Like I said there's no right or wrong way of going about it really.
But I would definitely encourage anyone to have prayer meetings. Getting together to pray in the name of our Lord Jesus has been, for me, a very edifying thing.
