Jesus the accused

Post by darinhouston » Sun Mar 07, 2021 2:14 pm

What scriptures address the Father's attitude towards Jesus as our proxy -- at his trial and on the cross -- specifically, the extent to which Jesus stood accused of our sins. The extent to which Jesus was pointing the finger of judgment at Jesus in our stead at his trial and on the cross?

Here are some scriptures to consider, I do not believe there are any that point to God accusing Jesus of being guilty for our sin.:

1 Peter 2:24
New American Standard Bible 1995
24 and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.

Hebrews 9:22
New American Standard Bible 1995
22 And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

Leviticus 4:31-35
New American Standard Bible 1995
31 Then he shall remove all its fat, just as the fat was removed from the sacrifice of peace offerings; and the priest shall offer it up in smoke on the altar for a soothing aroma to the Lord. Thus the priest shall make atonement for him, and he will be forgiven.
32 ‘But if he brings a lamb as his offering for a sin offering, he shall bring it, a female without defect. 33 He shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and slay it for a sin offering in the place where they slay the burnt offering. 34 The priest is to take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and all the rest of its blood he shall
pour out at the base of the altar. 35 Then he shall remove all its fat, just as the fat of the lamb is removed from the sacrifice of the peace offerings, and the priest shall offer them up in smoke on the altar, on the offerings by fire to the Lord. Thus the priest shall make atonement for him in regard to his sin which he has committed, and he will be forgiven.

John 1:28,29
28. These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29. The next day he *saw Jesus coming to him and *said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

Lambs are known for their white coats, and white is a symbol of purity and cleanliness. IMO it is a gross mistake to think that Jesus had any blemish of sin, His or ours, when He went to the cross. The sacrificial lamb had to be without blemish. To me it is clearly an example of a metonym to say Jesus bore any guilt upon the cross; Rather, He bore our punishment.

Thank you. I tend to agree with you.

This is the quote I was taking to Scripture. JD Greear led his session on Jesus being accused in our place with this in his Easter/Lent series on RightNowMedia.
"[In his silence he was conceding guilt.] Wasn't Jesus sinless? Yes, he was. And yet he stood there silently conceding guilt because behind the fingers of the priests and leaders pointing at Jesus, Jesus saw the finger of the Father pointing his finger of judgment at him, accusing Jesus of our sin. Let that sink in because it just may be the most important thing to understand about the cross."
This seems like pretty bad theology, but I'm curious if any other particular scriptures suggest this and what thoughts here there might be on this point.

Greetings
"[In his silence he was conceding guilt.]
Is a very strange conclusion. Silence is neither an admission of guilt or agreement, It is only a realization that words are pointless. If an innocent person concedes guilt, isn't that a type of lying?

I think God's attitude toward condemning the righteous is explained in this verse

"He that justifies the wicked and he that condemns the righteous, both alike are an abomination to the Lord."
