in matthew the robe put on Jesus to be mocked is scarlet...dyed fron the blood of insect eggs...:-/
in john the robe put on Jesus to be mocked is purple...
the pomegranates around the hem of aarons blue robe from exodus 39:24 are blue purple and scarlet...twined with linen
question:
what is the significance in the colors?
why do matthew and john disagree on the color of the robe...
according to the greek and according to exodus...
scarlet is not purple???

Hi Ronee,

John Peter Lange (my favorite commentary) gives a good explanation of the apparent discrepency between Matthew's and John's accounts of the color of the robe the soldiers put on Jesus (Mark also says purple). Remember the soldiers are mocking Jesus' claim to be king. The soldiers place on Jesus a crown of thorns as a symbol of an actual crown. They use a reed, a symbol of impotence, as a substitute for an actual sceptre or staff. And they placed on Him an actual scarlet (Matthew) military coat in mockery of the purple (Mark and John) robe of a king. It would be unlikely the soldiers would have had a real purple robe any more than a real crown or sceptre.

homer, thanks o.k. i get that ...but how does that reconcile with the fact that mark and john still say purple? also did you think there was any connection to the 3 colors being intertwined with linen on aarons pomegranate hem (blue robe)?

well, the hidden things of the old testament...seem different to me than types and anti types if it is in the details...for instance...certain colors being significant...or the jewels on the priests breastplate or all the detail in color and placement of items inside the tabernacle...just grabbing at little details...but they unfold pieces of a larger picture...which always points to Jesus...like a 1000 piece zigsaw puzzle i always wonder at how intricate God was and how if we search we can find "hidden things"
