Modesty Survey

Post by _Rae » Thu May 11, 2006 2:16 pm

A friend of mine created a survey on modesty/femininity for men to answer about their views on the subject. The results of the survey will be compiled together and used in teaching college women on modesty and femininity. The survey has been mainly sent so far to college-age guys and I think it would be great if we had more of a diversity of men who answer the questions.

Anyway, it would be so very helpful if some of you guys would answer the questions, either on the d-board (if you don't care about others reading your responses) or you can email them to me at rachel@igniteministries.org

Thanks for your help! Also, if it's just too long for you, but you would like to make some comments on a few of the questions, then that is fine as well, although it would be great if you could do the whole thing. Here is the questionairre....

1. Your age:

2. Marital status:

3. If married, how many years?

4. Based on the following scale, how would you rate the attire of the overall population of women in the world (i.e., non-Christian women), in regards to modesty. (For the purpose of this question, “modest” means their clothing does not inappropriately reveal the womanly figure—it does not cause you to stumble with ungodly lust.) Feel free to add comments.

1 – Horribly immodest
2 – More immodest than modest
3 – Neutral
4 – More modest than immodest
5 – Definitely modest

5. Based on the following scale, how would you rate the attire of the overall population of women in the world (i.e., non-Christian women), in regards to femininity. (For the purpose of this question, “feminine” means their clothing and appearance is distinctly womanly not masculine.) Feel free to add comments.

1 – Definitely masculine
2 – More masculine than feminine
3 – Gender neutral
4 – More feminine than masculine
5 – Clearly feminine

6. Based on the following scale, how would you rate the attire of the overall population of women in the church (i.e., Christian women), in regards to modesty. (For the purpose of this question, “modest” means their clothing does not inappropriately reveal the womanly figure—it does not cause you to stumble with ungodly lust.) Feel free to add comments.

1 – Horribly immodest
2 – More immodest than modest
3 – Neutral
4 – More modest than immodest
5 – Definitely modest

7. Based on the following scale, how would you rate the attire of the overall population of women in the church (i.e., Christian women), in regards to femininity. (For the purpose of this question, “feminine” means their clothing and appearance is distinctly womanly not masculine.) Feel free to add comments.

1 – Definitely masculine
2 – More masculine than feminine
3 – Gender neutral
4 – More feminine than masculine
5 – Clearly feminine

Please answer the following questions in regards to CHRISTIAN WOMEN ONLY (do not consider worldly, unconverted women for these questions). Answer in as many or as few words as you’d like. But please be as specific as possible (e.g., do not write, “tank-tops are bad,” but tell WHY you don’t like them—write something like, “I don’t like girls to wear tank-tops because they expose the neck and shoulders.”).

8. Comment on the use of make-up. Which would you prefer of women: heavy use, moderate use, no use? Why? Do you find a certain amount of make-up causes you to stumble in some way? How? What do you find “attractive” (in the sense of it being both aesthetically pleasing and proper for a godly woman) but yet not a stumbling block?

9. Comment on skirts. Consider length: above-the-knee, below-the-knee, mid-calf, ankle-length. Consider style: straight, fitted, loose, etc. Are there certain lengths, styles, or even fabrics (silk vs. cotton vs. denim vs. whatever) that you find more distracting or stumbling than others. Do you find skirts feminine/womanly? Why or why not? What do you find “attractive” (in the sense of it being both aesthetically pleasing and proper for a godly woman) but yet not a stumbling block?

10. Comment on shorts and pants/jeans/slacks. For shorts, consider length: above-the-knee, below-the-knee, etc. For shorts and pants, consider style: straight, fitted, loose, etc. Are there certain lengths, styles, or even fabrics (silk vs. cotton vs. denim vs. whatever) that you find more distracting or stumbling than others? Why? Consider modesty as well as femininity (e.g., sweatpants may be modest, but do you find them feminine?). Do you find shorts and pants feminine/womanly? Why or why not? Would it help you (spiritually speaking) for women to wear mostly skirts vs. shorts/pants/etc.? What do you find “attractive” (in the sense of it being both aesthetically pleasing and proper for a godly woman) but yet not a stumbling block?

11. Comment on shirts/blouses/tops. Consider the following: sleeve length, sleeveless, spaghetti straps, collars, necklines, V-necks, buttons, zippers, ribbons/bows, tightness vs. looseness, length in regards to the belly/waist, etc., etc. Are there certain lengths, styles, or even fabrics (silk vs. cotton vs. denim vs. whatever) that you find more distracting or stumbling than others? Why? Consider modesty as well as femininity (e.g., an oversized baseball shirt may be modest, but do you find it feminine?). What do you find “attractive” (in the sense of it being both aesthetically pleasing and proper for a godly woman) but yet not a stumbling block?

12. Comment on the use of jewelry and accessories. Which would you prefer of women: heavy use, moderate use, no use? Why? Do you find a certain amount or style of jewelry causes you to stumble in some way? How? Do you notice purses at all? Any comments on style or color or size? In regards to both jewelry and accessories (like purses), consider modesty as well as femininity. What do you find “attractive” (in the sense of it being both aesthetically pleasing and proper for a godly woman) but yet not a stumbling block?

13. Comment on hairstyles. Consider length: chin-length, shoulder-length, mid-back, longer, etc. Consider style: straight, curly, gel, dye, highlights, buns, etc. Consider accessories: ribbons, clips, etc. Are there certain lengths, styles, or accessories that you find more distracting or stumbling than others? Why? Are there certain lengths, styles, or accessories that you find more feminine or masculine than others? What do you find “attractive” (in the sense of it being both aesthetically pleasing and proper for a godly woman) but yet not a stumbling block?

14. What are the top 3 things you think Christian women should know in regards to this issue of clothing/appearance/ modesty/femininity? Or, in other words, if you could tell Christian women just 3 things (or recommendations), what would they be?

15. Is there anything else you’d like to say about this issue that hasn’t been covered in this survey? Or any suggestions on how to make this survey better or more effectual?

Hi Rae,

I don't mind being the first guinea pig here. I do want to pre-qualify my answers, however, by saying that if I'm "stumbled" with ungodly thoughts, it's only because I'm not walking in the Spirit at that moment. However, as someone who has been "stumbled" many times (even during worship at church  ), I don't mind helping the sisters out in trying to determine how to be more loving toward their brethren (the true "weaker" sex) in modesty. I'm very encouraged that there are sisters out there who care enough to even think about these things. But I want to be careful not to suggest the need for dress codes.

I've bolded my answers:

1. Your age: 38

2. Marital status: M

3. If married, how many years? 7

Tough to answer since I really only see my little part of the world.

Same comments apply from last question

I think Christian women are still, for the most part, modest in dress. Again, I think the cause of stumbling is internal to the man regardless of the influence of what is in his view. Modest dress does help, but doesn't necessarily prevent ungodly thoughts.

7. Based on the following scale, how would you rate the attire of the overall population of women in the church (i.e., Christian women), in regards to femininity. (For the purpose of this question, “feminine” means their clothing and appearance is distinctly womanly not masculine.) Feel free to add comments.

What do you find “attractive” (in the sense of it being both aesthetically pleasing and proper for a godly woman) but yet not a stumbling block?

I prefer as little make-up as possible and that which appears natural.

I prefer skirts that show as little skin above the knee as possible. Also, I'm partial to thicker material like denim and cordorouy. These silky summer skirts women are wearing now can be difficult at times.

Would it help you (spiritually speaking) for women to wear mostly skirts vs. shorts/pants/etc.? What do you find “attractive” (in the sense of it being both aesthetically pleasing and proper for a godly woman) but yet not a stumbling block?

Again, my answer is similar to the last question. I don't personally like to see the upper leg and I don't prefer thinner silk-like material. I don't have any preference to whether pants/shorts/skirts are worn, only that they don't draw attention to "womanly" features.

I have to confess I really do not like the ultra-form fitting, belly exposing shirts that are in style today (even among Christian women). These seem to be especially popular among bustier women. I'm looking forward to the pendulum swinging the other way again. Again, I don't have a style preference, only that the clothing doesn't draw attention to the distinctive female features.

The only jewelry I really object to is that which seems to intentionally draw attention to one's self by standing out as different. This applies to both men and women. Nothing about jewelry is a stumbling block to me.

Hairstyles are not a stumbling block to me. However, I least favor mohawks, wildly colored hair, and shaved heads on women.

14. What are the top 3 things you think Christian women should know in regards to this issue of clothing/appearance/ modesty/femininity? Or, in other words, if you could tell Christian women just 3 things (or recommendations), what would they be?

1. Please realize that men are very visual and that the "burning" with passion Paul speaks of in 1 Cor 7:9 is not an overstatement. If you draw attention to your womanly features, you should know that you will most likely be the object of someone's inappropriate lustful thoughts sometime during the day. This may be true even if you do dress modestly, but even more likely if you don't. Even though this is typically not the goal for Christian women, it's important to realize that even Christian men are still men with hormonal reactions.

2. If you are married, your husband has exclusive rights to be stimulated by your appearance. It is more loving to him if you don't tempt others. If you are unmarried, the same can apply to your future husband.

3. Good works are much more attractive than clothing. Memorize 1 Tim 2:9-10. :)

15. Is there anything else you’d like to say about this issue that hasn’t been covered in this survey? Or any suggestions on how to make this survey better or more effectual?

I would just like to say again how pleased I am that there are Christian women that care about this issue. If more did, I think it could go a long way in helping out the brethren that are trying to live godly lives with purity of mind. Thank you.

I wish more men would reply to this post. I really do think it could be beneficial to us women to find out what men really think about this issue. I know I tend to stress out over whether what I wear is modest enough or not. Knowing what men think about certain articles of clothing would be helpful in figuring out what my own standard of modesty should be.

Rae, when your friend compiles the results of her survey, will you link to it here? Thanks!

3 – Neutral
4 – More modest than immodest
5 – Definitely modest

5. Based on the following scale, how would you rate the attire of the overall population of women in the world (i.e., non-Christian women), in regards to femininity.

How? What do you find “attractive” (in the sense of it being both aesthetically pleasing and proper for a godly woman) but yet not a stumbling block?

a. moderate use - I've seen women without makeup and on average most definitely need it.
b. I sense no stumbling over makeup except I judge them to need it on average
c. tom boyishness

I prefer seeing women in dresses cut just below the knee. I see it as a display of intellegence and poise.

Just slightly above the knee is acceptable but it is not this fact that would cause me to stumble or not. I regard shorts as summer wear and do not find it a stumbling block.

I like the look of sleeveless blouses/somewhat loose fitting. I find this attractive but not a stumbling block.

Moderate use of jewelry is fine.

I prefer short length hair.

14. What are the top 3 things you think Christian women should know in regards to this issue of clothing/appearance/ modesty/femininity? Or, in other words, if you could tell Christian women just 3 things (or recommendations), what would they be?

These are rather broad comments but don't dress as though you are available if you are not.
Stylish dress is fine if done with modesty.
A good personality is far more an asset then your looks.

15. Is there anything else you’d like to say about this issue that hasn’t been covered in this survey? Or any suggestions on how to make this survey better or more effectual?

No

I have no problem with make-up and find it's use aesthetically pleasing, when it has been applied lightly. IMHO, make-up should be applied to magnify the natural beauty, not to stand out in and of itself. It isn't a stumbling block at all.

I find them feminine and amoral. However, the more leg that is shown increases the opportunity for a man to have inappropriate thoughts. I would leave the length up to the conscience of the woman, with the above consideration.

What do you find “attractive” (in the sense of it being both aesthetically pleasing and proper for a godly woman) but yet not a stumbling block?

The new trend of low-rise pants and jeans aren't helpful if combined with an untucked, short shirt. They seem to be an excuse to show off underwear. Other than that, I'm indifferent towards pants.

Tight tops as well as a neckline that seems purposed to show off the wearer's breasts.

My only comment is that $$ spent on jewelry could be spent on God's Kingdom. Neither myself nor my wife could bring ourselves to buy diamonds or jewels. She wears faux jewelry.

I'm indifferent.

14. What are the top 3 things you think Christian women should know in regards to this issue of clothing/appearance/ modesty/femininity? Or, in other words, if you could tell Christian women just 3 things (or recommendations), what would they be?

1) Godly character is the most attractive adornment
2) Please do not be obsessed with this issue. If you love and obey Christ, your conscience and the Holy Spirit will guide you into modest dress. Those who usually cause me to stumble have intended to "show" themselves anyway.
3) Many Christian men blame too much of their sin onto the women around them regarding this issue.

15. Is there anything else you’d like to say about this issue that hasn’t been covered in this survey? Or any suggestions on how to make this survey better or more effectual?
How about a prize for completing, like a digital camera or free hotel stay
