Praying for Revival

I was listening to Steve G's radio program (i think from 11/7) and he said that prior to his weekly meeting going through the book of Acts (which is excellent by the way, per the CD i have) they meet for an hour to pray for revival.

i would like to initiate something like that here among some fellow believers, but i specifically would like to know what types of things are prayed for. i suspect they may be numerous, but i would like Steve's (and other's) ideas about what we should be praying for when praying for revival.

I've also been praying for revival and hearing that Steve is conducting prayer meetings encourages me to continue doing so. After a while you fall into a "is it only me?" mentality. It's good to be reminded that others are praying toward a common goal.

I've been primarily asking God to shed the religiousosity from American Christendom, leaving only spirit-led believers who walk according to their profession. I'm looking forward to a day when the saints will no longer have to refer to themselves as Christians. People will know we are Christians because of our love for one another and for our neighbor. Until that day comes, I will not be satisfied.

To modern westerners, Christians are just people who hold up signs at political rallies and whose leaders are regularly being investigated for fraud and sexual misconduct. The church that claims to have answers is equally engulfed in the sins of hate, greed, and divorce. Until this changes, the world won't take notice.

I'm tempted to visit the next ralley where Christians are holding signs declaring "God hates fags" with my own sign that reads, "God hates divorce... and that's an actual bible verse!"

I actually kind of get the feeling that revival may already be in progress (or at least the beginning of one). I'm coming across more and more people that have a hunger for God and are not satisfied with the status quo.

I don't know whether it will manifest visibly in our churches or not. Perhaps this revival will go largely unnoticed (under the radar if you will) until it's unmistakably noticeable in our society at large. Wouldn't that be just like God to work outside our paradigm? His ways are not our ways.

Of course, this is all speculation. But I'm optimistic just the same.

I think it's worthy of on-going prayer and obedience to the leading of the Spirit in all of our doings and goings about.

I have this feeling too Christopher. At least I feel like He's going to send it soon. I have been praying for it. Especially lately.

That's interesting...I've thought the same thing, but wasn't sure if it I was just coming to a turning point in my own life, or...well, I don't know what.

In another thread, Jim from Covina said that the church doesn't need revival, it needs reformation. Maybe both are on the horizon?

Reformation and revival, it seems to me, are two parts of the same thing aren't they?

Many people who I have heard/read speak about revival say that it begins in the church. A new commitment to the word of God, holiness, and prayer (reformation) leads the church to go out and spread the gospel with an annointing from God's Spirit, which brings revival.

My understanding is that most, if not all, revivals start with prayer.

Even the first revival (in the New Testament) began with an 11-day prayer meeting as the disciples prayed in the upper room, waiting on the promised Holy Spirit. 3.000 were saved after hearing this one Gospel presentation with the annointing of the Holy Spirit.

i am optimisitic also, but desperate may be a better term. why? i am not entrirely sure; but over the past couple of years God has consistently led (through different sources) into a deeper desire for revival, and a deepening in my own spiritual walk.

a couple a years ago i was at a youth workers retreat and the speaker was the guy who started the 40 day spiritual revolution for HS students. he introduced us to the fireonthealtar website where there are many compilations that encourage a deeper faith and desire for revival. through that sight i found sermonindex.net where there are so many challenging sermons.

then, quite by chance, i found the narrow path site several months ago. what a blessing steve g's teachings have been! he has challenged me more in the past few months than i have been challenged in my prior 25 yrs as a christian.

then of course i found this forum. what can i say? it is like i have found a new family of sorts... even though i am a relative newcomer. i cannot tell you how much i appreciate each of you that visit this forum. i am thinking about spiritual things all of the time because of what goes on here. my signature verse is more real now than it was when i first started here. i hope all of your hearts are burning for the Lord.

i agree, christopher, that there seems to be a greater willingness to begin shaking loose some religious pretense that has plagued evangelicalism. there are quite a few bros and sisters at the church i attend who are longing for a more genuine expression of the church. i was talking to my pastor the other night and he expressed the same thing.

i think at least we can commit to each other here that we will be praying for revival, however the Lord wants that to be expressed. we are separated by many miles, but we are near in Spirit.

One heart one spirit
One voice to praise You
We are the body of Christ
One goal one vision
To see You exalted
We are the body of Christ

And to this we give our lives
To see You glorified

Amen TK, I am going to pray for revival at least once a week at my bible study. I just learned something new about having prayers heard which most of the people here probably know, but i did'nt. Not only should you not have any unforgiveness toward others before you pray but you need to forgive yourself from any condemnation you have toward yourself before praying. I was really just upset with myself for a dumb mistake i made in my business three years ago but after i forgave myself God showed me that i actually had'nt messed up.
Anyway the love and faith and knowledge people have at this forum is remarkable.
