Brody,
That is classic , but you forgot Drago's "I will break you" take. Much better in my opinion that "Gene will lose".

I think that you can be a christian and participate in UFC and Pride, but there is much wisdom needed as far as getting caught up in the rage that can be consuming.

My initial thoughts on UFC are that it is pretty borderline. I don't agree with the above suggestions that it is no different than other sports. It seems to me the intent of a UFC match is to harm the oppenent whereas the intent of most other sports is to score.

I also don't think it makes much of a difference that there are professing Christians who play the sport. Many Christians do things they should not do. There are professing Christians who bomb abortion clinics, practice homosexuality, etc. I'm not saying the UFC athletes aren't Christians, I'm just saying their profession of faith isn't a closing argument in favor of the sport.

The only thing we have to go by is that the early church didn't watch the gladiator games, as far as I can tell, and UFC is closer to that than other sports. So I'd think hard before supporting it.

Hey Matt.

Do you see a difference in watching secular movies, and UFC? I notice your signature is taken from the movie "Seven" in which a pregnant womans head is cut off, and scores of other horiffic crimes brutal in nature.

True, but my intentions would not be to break Gene, just make him lose. Then I am going after James White.

Yes, I do see a difference in that one is acting and one, as far as I know, is real. Also, as far as I know people watch UFC for entertainment. Anyone who has seen the movie seven knows it is anything but entertaining. It is discgusting. But it had a message that is contained in my signature, a message I happen to agree with.

But like I said, I don't wish to be combative about the subject. The poster wanted to know what the rest of us think about UFC and we all gave answers. He can consider all perspectives. I'm sure many people think watching movies I've seen is inappropriate. They are free to confront me on it, but that's a different thread :)

God bless,
matthew

Brody, I met Jeff when he visited our gym two years ago so I don't know him very well. He's a quiet guy but holds some very odd views, as seen from his billboard of tattoos. I believe he's a communist.

This has turned into an interesting topic, since it combines two things I actually know something about: sport fighting and movies. The real issue is, to what degree can a Christian participate in or enjoy watching things that are.... less than holy. I think Paul would say this is left up to the conscience of each believer. I, for one, can't watch the UFC without noticing the scantily clad ring girls. Perhaps I'm weak in faith but such things stumble me and I try to avoid things that stumble me. This is increasingly difficult in our society, however, because our culture tells women to "bare it all" if they want attention.

But aside from the allure of half-naked (make that 90% naked) ring girls, you have the issue of pride. Even the Christian fighters like Randy, Rich and Matt trash talk during the intros. I realize the promoters force them to do this but I find it unacceptable. If you're a Christian you don't talk about knocking your opponent's head into the third row. These men may very well be Christians but they are compromised, in my opinion.
