I personally enjoy reading the NLT.

When I read any version I keep in mind that I’m reading a translation. I don’t know of any person who has been involved in translating the Bible that thinks they have completed a perfect translation.

One important thing to keep in mind when reading the NLT is that the goal of the translators was not to render a “word for word” translation. Their aim was to present the intended meaning of a passage in a modern readable fashion. The translators explain their philosophical approach in the “Introduction to the New Living Translation” at the beginning of the NLT. I’d highly recommend you read this if you are concerned about accuracy. It will explain to you where, how and why they deviated from “word for word” renderings.

I find the NLT most beneficial when I’m doing general reading through the Bible. If I’m studying a passage I’ll refer to it as I would a commentary.

When I went through the Great Commission school in 1990 you used the NKJV. Are you still using it mostly for study? What translation do you believe is closest to the original manuscripts (as far as interpretation goes) Thanks. Keith Bumpass

Keith, as far as I know, I think Steve G still uses the NKJV as his primary version.
