Maybe you're like me....
And have an ancient monitor.
You know, those old-fashioned TVs kind (aka, CRTs, cathode-ray tubes kind).
Or - maybe you have the new-fangled LCD/flat type.

In any event, I found Readability ---
A really cool Firefox Add-On that---with a click---removes extraneous stuff from pages, as well as making what you're reading easy to read. You can select various layouts, such as font type and size, etc. (So many sites have dinky fonts these days)....

The main advantage for me has been:
My small 15" monitor doesn't 'reach' to whole web pages.
(I often get a horizontal scrollbar and have to scroll left-and-right to read what all is there). With Readbility the text gets resized to a-perfect-fit.
So, no more scrolling (yay)!

With a recent update I've been able to read entire pages on this forum. (It used to be you had to click on each post---or---it would just display the OP (original post). The only caveat is: There aren't any 'lines' that separates posts. But I've not had trouble distinguishing them apart.

Anyways....
Now I don't have to get a new monitor (to get rid of that annoying scrollbar)!
Or, like, need to scroll from Philadelphia to San Francisco to read stuff!
Which is nice, coz I prefer CRT monitors over LCDs (lots easier on the eyes).
One more thing: I stuck the Readability click-it thing at the very top (beside 'Help').
Really convenient.

That's because of the resolution, not the size of your monitor. What resolution are you using? It should be the highest your video card & monitor will support, while staying above 70 Hz refresh rate.

I did the highest resolution (1024x768), which took away the horizontal scrollbar.
However, it made the font very tiny.
So I switched back to 800x600 and use Readability.

'Can't afford a new monitor now.
But even if I could, I'd stay with CRT (till they make LCDs that don't hurt my eyes)!
'Might get a bigger CRT sometime (like a 21").

You can adjust the font size. Assuming you're running Windows, go back to where you set the resolution, and there should be a button that says Advanced or similar. In there should be a setting for font size, which is probably on 100% now. Set it to 125%, then try 1024x768 again, and that should solve your problem.

I have several 19" CRT monitors that were either given to me, or I pulled them out of dumpsters, even way out here in the boonies. If you're anywhere remotely close to a population center, a note on Craigslist will probably get you more free 19" monitors than you want to go pick up.

Personally I prefer LCD's, but I'm too cheap to buy one..

On a larger monitor @ 19" or so --
Yeah, eBay has 19-21" CRTs for about $50-75.
(And I could prolly get one in the local paper for less).

However (and otherwise) --
I did the font increase to 125% and that helped, thanks!
It was a marked improvement but diff sites still didn't 'fit' how I'd prefer.
So -- I went to Firefox Add-ons and got --
NoSquint

With all the stuff you suggested + NoSquint I'm: All Set!
NoSquint has Text and Page Zoom.
You can do them individually or both.
What's *cooler* about it is: Firefox remembers each site's or page's preferences you select.
So you can tailor how it will appear in the future.
I selected it remembers it indefinitely.
(You can choose when Firefox shuts down, or other, like in a year, etc.).

So....
Right now, it's like I have a really nice new monitor!
'Viewability' is exactly how I want it to every page/ site I go to.
All I have to do is set it when I go to them.
Also, you can choose to resize from 'View' (and NoSquint remembers).

Come to the forum from Steve's homepage --
NoSquint imports page settings from there.

To solve this, I bookmarked the forum, and enter it from there.
(So now my settings for the forum are the same as I set them, earlier).

Well, this is getting complicated....
When I log in and out -- stuff gets resized.
Not sure why or how, ( ) -- but the NoSquint add-on is still sweet!
