Was The Holy Spirit Mary's Husband?

Post by seer » Tue Nov 11, 2008 12:49 pm

As some of you know from the radio show, I'm in an e-mail discussion with the caller Tom - a catholic. One of his arguments for why Mary did not have other children was because the Holy Spirit was Mary's spouse (and of course Joseph did not want to have sex with another's wife). That when scripture speaks of the Holy Spirit "overshadowing" her, that that was the language of marriage. Has any one heard of this doctrine? Is this offical Church teaching?

Yes Karen,
Tom and I have been at this over two months by e-mail. Most of that time has been spent on the authority of the Pope. I too wish there was a Roman Catholic section. And Darin thanks for your deep theological response - that was my reaction also. It just shows how far they have to go - I do wonder though if this is offical Catholic doctrine.

I guess this is offical teaching of the church: Mary is called "The unwed Virgin espoused the Spirit" "Abode of the King" or "Bridal Chamber of the Word." "The mysterious relationship between the Spirit and Mary an aspect redolent of marriage."

Darin, could you move this thread over there? Thanks...

I don't have that admin privilege, it seems -- I left a message for one who does.
