It's in 1 Sam 13:14 that Samuel seems to say that "The Lord has sought out for Himself a man after His own heart" in what is apparently a reference to David, who was still just a shepherd at the time, and Paul seems to reference that in Acts 13:22.
As for the original post, maybe it was just the way things were done back then without a lot of thought. After all, I call my house "my house" and other people call it "Shawn's house".
