Halloween Ideas

Howdy All--

i want to preface this post by stating that i am aware of all of the origins of Halloween and the arguments against celebrating it from a Christian standpoint.

That being said, i must admit that i have something of a soft spot for Halloween. For one thing, despite the fact that my mom and dad were Christians- we went to a conservative Baptist church, they still let me go trick or treating and i always had a lot of fun. honest-- i didn't worship Satan or anything! never even egged a house

I have also always been a fan of the old horror movies- you know the old Universal flicks with Karloff and Lugosi and Chaney that they used to show friday nights on "creature feature." I am no fan of modern horror movies and will not watch them.

I even still have a bunch of my old "monster models" that were very popular in the early 70s and are now quite the collectors item. something my mother did not actually throw away!

The reason for this post is that I would like to do something on Halloween night at my house that will relay some christian truth. At christmas time, i create a really cool silhouette that i put on the garage door with a verse like "unto us a savior is born." i am thinking about creating some sort of halloween scene but would like to reference a scripture verse that would be appropriate on halloween. i am having a lot of trouble thinking of one.
of course it cant be really long because its a two car garage and it has to be readable from the street. and it doesnt necessarily have to be a bible verse- it could be a catchy slogan with a christian meaning. and i am looking for something a little more subtle than something like "in hell no one can hear you scream."

Can any of you creative folks think up any ideas?

Of course if you think that I am entirely wrong in wanting to do ANYTHING like this on halloween, then i want to hear that too. I wont be offended!

I used to celebrate Halloween when I was little as well, but times have changed and I have prevented my children from celebrating it. When I was a kid it used to be a ghost sheet or you dressed up as your favorite super hero, but today it seems to be all about how gory you can look. Also, I just want to clarify that this is my personal conviction and I am not impressing this upon anybody. Sorry, I don't really have any saying for you, maybe something that has to do with the lit candle in the pumpkin...I don't know.

Here is an idea from my old church in case anyone wants to celebrate it in a christian format. They used to open a house to the neighborhood that belonged to the church. Inside it would be all decorated and in each room they would setup different scenes from the gospels. The people who played the characters would tell the story about the scene and then hand out candy to the kids. You can even make it creative by handing out gummy fish if your doing the casting net scene or chocolate coins if your doing the tithing theme. Anyway, just an idea to christianize halloween.

believe i have not yet decided that i will do anything-- just thinking about it.

Hallowe'en is the highest "holy day" in Wicca. Should Christians have anything at all to do with the evil night?

Even if it Hallowe'en were an "innocent" time, what are we teaching our children when we encourage "trick or treating"? Are we not teaching them to get free goodies from people? Should we not rather teach them that it is "better to give than to receive"? Should we not be teaching them that they should buy what they want by earning money, rather than going door-to-door to ask for treats?

I know a number of churches have "alternate" celebrations on the evil night, and that is certainly better than taking part in the customs of Hallowe'en. Notwithstanding (as I see it) any recognition of the evil night in any way, dignifies it. Such recognition has no place among the disciples of Christ.

I think it's a great idea, TK. How about a depiction of Jesus on the cross and this piece of text from 1 John 4:17 -

"...perfect love casteth out fear..."

Or Romans 8:38-39:

"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

I ordered the 4 chick tracts that Steve originally liked and i'm gonna try to discreetly slip them in the Halloween bag with the candy if possible.

I'm curious,

Which tracts did Steve like? I remember him mentioning that he used to like Chick tracts before they became like the "timmy" tract up there.
