Strange Fire

Is there any reference in scripture that speaks of "strange fire?"

If so, where and how does it apply?

see Lev, Ch 10.

God had previously sent fire from heaven to light the fire on the altar, and the coals from this fire was supposed to be used by the priests to burn the incense required per the law. however, nadab and abihu (aarons sons) offered "strange fire" (i.e. not from the altar) to burn the incense, so fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed them.

I was listening to Steve G just this morning talking about the beatitudes, and being poor in spirit, and how God will only accept back from us what he has already given us (because we have nothing to offer ourselves). he related it back to the story of nadab and abihu.

So would some of these prosperity/name it claim it be considered strange fire? the reason I ask is that I believe I heard the Holy Spirit speak that
word to me many years ago about some ministries/people...?

i am note sure if "strange doctrine" is equated with strange fire- i suppose it could be. I think of strange fire as being something that we offer to God that isnt real or is not of the spirit. for example, many chruches try to "create" a sense of worship by amplifiers, loud music, etc etc. the spirit may be there, but i think attempts to "work up" the presence of the spirit may be counterfeit and threfore "strange fire."

Hi TK and MLH,

I agree with you, TK, that strange doctrine is not the same as strange fire, and that strange fire has to do with what we offer to God. I'm not very familiar with everything that the prosperity teachers teach, but could they perhaps be offering to God their superior ability to "encapsulate their faith in word-vessels?" This seems to be foreign to everything in scripture and might therefore be strange fire.

Just a thought

i agree with you michelle.

a contrite spirit and humble heart is difficult if not impossible to reconcile w/ prosperity teaching, or an attitude that we should be "entitled" to prosperity because we are "king's kids."

In the mid eighties I was introduced to the "Faith" teaching by a "mature" believer. I spent almost 2 years engrossing myself in their books and tapes etc. I am very familiar with their teaching. When I listened to Steve G's first lecture on the Word of Faith movement I was laughing because he did such a good job explaining their views...I thought I was listening to their teaching all over again! BTW...If Steve G is reading this, I found Kenneth Hagin the most appealing for the exact same reasons as you. I completely resonated with you.

Their teaching, IMO, is not merely a different "view" but rather a fundamental change in the way you approach God and live from day to day. I don't want to go into detail here, but I can see how "Strange Fire" could be applied to their teaching (especially the application of it).

Yes , i can relate because the lady who led me to the Lord 5 years ago is a devotee of his. If we discuss anything biblical and she says "But Kenneth Hagin said this" that means the conversation is over.
