From his article, it sounds like he believes Rick Warren meant "those who disagree" when he referenced troublemakers -- Farrah says discipline is meant not for those who disagree but to heretics. Warren could have been referring to those promoting disunity and strife (heretic) and not merely those who disagree without destroying unity.

I don't know the context of Warren's statement, but it sounds like Farrah jumped on him for something he didn't intend to say.

you're right darin- maybe i was too quick to jump on farah's bandwagon, probably because i am no fan of rick w. in the text of farah's article, you can link to rick warren's actual statement. he does seem to say to get rid of the troublemakers, via the biblical model.

my problem is this--what if a pastor believes that anyone who disagrees with him, even on a non-essential theological point, is a troublemaker?

(I should probably add that this was a shameless plug for a pastor mentoring program my pastor friend and I have developed. It is in the Beta stage and is open only to Nebraska, Kansas and Colorado Pastors until after the 1st quarter of the year. We have 16 mentors and numerous mentees registered so far.)

But, if he means the same thing Paul does as to troublemakers, we've got the same problem with Paul -- he doesn't define troublemakers as simply those who disagree, so I think we need to assume the best from him. I'm no fan of the mega-church (or pastoral) model (though I belong to both), but I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one unless an example of this is shown to include disagreement on non-essential doctrine.
