A friend, who is 7th day adventist said it means that if I love
God I will keep his commandments. ( 10 commandments)
Sabbath rest!
Well, I told him that would be easy because I like to rest
and be with the Lord, I just didnt realize Saturday would
please the Lord more than any other day. ???

He didn't say exactly that. I don't know why the King James and related translations make a command out of it. It is not "Keep my commandments" but "will keep my commandments". The verb is in the future active indicative. That's the indicative mode ---- not the imperative mode. He clearly means just what He said, "If you love me, you will keep my commandments." Keeping His commandments are a consequent of loving Him. So the Seventh Day Adventist was right in that respect. What does Jesus mean when he says, " IF you love me keep my commandments?
However, most of His commandments are found in "the sermon on the mount", Matthew 5, 6, and 7. Nowhere do we find that Jesus commanded his disciples to keep the Sabbath, offer sacrifices, give bacteria-laden water to our wife as a test if we suspect her of adultery, or to observe any of the rest of the Mosaic law.

Hi Paidion,
I know I can research the meaning of this but I will ask you anyway. Could you please briefly explain the meaning of the qoutation.future active indicative

Paul, I didn't notice your question until tonight, Sunday, Feb 24.
Future tense --- statements about actions in the future. In this case "you will keep my commandments"
Active voice --- "The boy fed his dog." In the active voice, the referent of the subject (the boy) is the one who does the action. In the Passive voice, the referent of the subject receives the action. Example: "The boy was given ten dollars." The boy didn't give ten dollars (as in the active voice). The boy received ten dollars.
Indicative mode (some grammarians say "Indicative mood, but that doesn't seem to make sense.)
If a verb is in the imperative mode, that verb is a command which is given. Example: "Eat your soup."
In the subjunctive mode, the verb refers to something which might be. Example: "If I should go to town today, I will get some groceries."
In the indicative mode, the verb refers to an actual state of affairs:
"The deer jumped over the fence."

Thanks Paidion, I needed your grammer teaching the other day referring to Allyn's question about Jesus' 'imperative' command to not think that He was annulling the Law of Moses.
You earlier, wrote:
And what do you think Jesus meant when He commanded His disciples to do and observe all the Moses said to do and observe? (Mt. 23:2-3)
Thanks for your opinion.
peace, dmatic

Well, actually, you know that I disagree that Jesus did not command us to keep the Law of Moses. What do you think He meant when He said, speaking of the Law of Moses and the Prophets: "Whosoever therefore, breaks even the least of these commandments (From Moses and Prophets) and teaches others to break it will be called least in the kingdom of heaven>>>"?However, most of His commandments are found in "the sermon on the mount", Matthew 5, 6, and 7. Okay, Dmatic, in this post I will deal with Matthew 5:17-22
17 "Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them.
I have indicated before that the laws given to the Israelites through Moses, was often a concession to the hardness of their hearts. It was often a lesser command than the deeper LAW OF GOD of which it was a poor expression. Jesus did not come to abolish THE TRUE LAW OF GOD, but to express it as it really was!
18 For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished.
Up to that time, THE TRUE LAW OF GOD was not accomplished. The Israelites didn't fulfill that law, even in its weakened form. Jesus came to show its TRUE FORM, and also died to enable us to obey it.
19 Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Of which commandments is Jesus speaking? Not of the commandments given through Moses, but of the commandments which he is about to give, the thing that God really wanted, not the weakened form, not the concessions he made to the hard-hearted Israelites, but the real thing!
20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
The scribes and Pharisees thought they were keeping the law to a tee! They were keeping it down to the last detail! But it was the weakened form, the concession that they were keeping. God's people must do better than that! Your righteosness must exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees! Jesus then gives an example:
21 "You have heard that it was said to the men of old, ‘You shall not kill; and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment.’
22 But I say to you that every one who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother shall be liable to the council, and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be liable to the hell of fire.
Jesus quotes what was said to the Israelites of old. He begins with one of the ten commandments: "You shall not kill". The Israelites thought they were doing well if they did not kill. So did the Pharisees in Jesus' day. But Jesus shows that to really do what God wants, we must not even be angry with another person or insult him. Doing so springs from the same spirit of hatred that motivates murder! And anyone who has that hate is liable to hell fire.
Jesus continues to show that THE TRUE LAW OF GOD --- what God requires goes beyond the Law of Moses:
Law of Moses: Do not commit adultery
THE TRUE LAW OF GOD: Do not look at a wife with lust; even that is adultery.
Law of Moses: Do not swear falsely
THE TRUE LAW OF GOD: Do not swear at all. Let your answer be a simple "yes" or "no".
Law of Moses: An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. You can get even with someone, but don't go beyond that.
THE TRUE LAW OF GOD: Do not resist evil. If someone strikes you, turn the other cheek.
Law of Moses: Love your neighbour and hate your enemy.
THE TRUE LAW OF GOD: Love your enemies and pray for those who use you cruelly.
This revelation by Christ of THE TRUE LAW OF GOD is also called THE LAW OF CHRIST:
Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2
These are the commandments which shall not pass away! This is the law of which all must be accomplished!
Jesus continued to explain THE TRUE LAW OF GOD throughout Matthew 5, 6, and 7. He concluded this revelation of THE TRUE LAW with these words:
"Every one then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock; and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.
And every one who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand; and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell; and great was the fall of it." Matthew 7:24-27
Notice that Jesus refers to what is to be obeyed as "these words of mine". He is not reiterating the Law given through Moses, but he is explaining THE DEEPER LAW and how it goes well beyond the Law of Moses. And it doesn't include those parts recorded in Leviticus and elsewhere about which foods to eat, what kinds of offerngs and sacrifices to make, which days to observe, new moons and Sabbaths, what to do if a fit of jealousy comes over a husband, etc. None of those things are part of THE TRUE LAW OF GOD.
17 "Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them.

Wow, Paidion. Truly an inspired understanding and conveyance. Thank you - and finally putting to rest that which cannot be kept.
