The word "host"

Hi,
I am sure someone out there will have an answer to my question. The word "host" appears many times in the bible. I appears as "heavenly host" and "Lord of hosts", but I honestly have no idea what it really means. I think I have taken for granted this word without ever really questioning its meaning. In Catholicism it is used interchangeable with Communion wafer (I think).
Does anyone have an insight? Thanks in advance :)

Host = a great number.

Some of the modern translations translate "Lord of Hosts" as "Lord of the heaven's armies."

Ok. Any ideas where the catholic church came up with calling the communion bread a host?

I think host means the receiver in this contest. One who's body is taken by something.
