Steve's book All You Want to Know About Hell is up on Amazon for pre-ordering for anyone interested.
I look forward to reading it too.
Could it be the teaching of purgatory is a erroneous interpretation of the view where people suffer proportionate punishment and then are annihilated?
I was wondering about that.

A reasonable question. But after a quick scan through the Catholic Encyclopedia's entry on Purgatory, it doesn't appear there's any relationship whatsoever. What little scripture they offer as the basis for purgatory seems to me to be really grasping at straws. There's no similarity at all to a Biblically based Christian annihilationist view.

New here, first post. Steve, it certainly is of interest what you have to say on the topic of hell. Since arriving at the viewpoint that all Biblical truths should first be filtered through what Jesus (Y'shua) said on any topic, it was enlightening to review His teachings on the topic. There's a link on my web site called 'What about unbelievers' that I tried to determine exactly what He said about it first. It fits with the viewpoint of all He taught - that was noted to date. It's really about if we are drawn to Him and faithful disciples or not - isn't it? Or what basic conclusion did you reach?

Thanks for sharing, Brother. My conclusion is tentative. I believe that the traditional view has the least exegetical support of all the options. Which of the alternatives may prove true will be known when the Lord comes (or sooner, perhaps, by people more intelligent than myself). My conviction is that the exact manner in which God resolves the problem of sin need not be known by any of us in this life, but that whatever it turns out to be will have to be agreeable with God's character.

I attempted to search out all of the ramifications of this topic back in the early 90's. I realized very quickly that to check the passages that deal with the punishment of the wicked being either eternal or that they would be annihilated was tightly connected to the idea of the soul either being an entity that could function on its own after it left the body, or was simply the life force and breath of the body. It seems to speak to the character of God as well. I look forward to reading Steve's book, as he always does a remarkably thorough job with any of his research. At the end, after going back and forth like a fan on a summer day, I fell back into the traditional camp, though it does have its problems. Whatever God decides, He is honest, just and good and all things will be vindicated. But for us who remain, there seem to be a lot of bumps in the road.

I just checked with Amazon today. They will release the book on October 15. Maybe everyone else already knew that.

I just posted my first post over at the Rethinking Hell website, which primarily promotes conditional immortality.

I told them that I think Steve would be a good guest on their podcast!

Steve, are you or your publishers planning any kind of "promotional tour"? How does that work?
